how do graduates get work experience?
Four years of study at university in an engineering discipline. Been to all of the graduate shows. No takers.
Why? No experience is the given response. Maybe no Australian experience is the given response. or maybe no response at all.
How do you solve this problem? Here are a couple of approaches you may try.
1. Volunteer – it does not really matter what it is. Yes sure it would be great to work in your field. Getting you out of bed in the morning and doing good stuff for other people will get you noticed. There are projects in rail heritage that take engineers. Civil engineers.
2. Apply to positions in the country side. Be prepared to move to a country location. Sure your friends are all in the cities. They will not pay your wages or salary. Another country idea. Take up seasonal work, and while you are there ask a local what engineering organisations are around. They may or may not know. There are manufacturers based in country victoria and organisations that recruit for engineers. Local government, local authorities, water companies, electricity suppliers, defence etc.
3. Know someone in Engineering. Ask them for some help in getting work experience.
4. Know what the health and safety training requirements are required for companies. Get trained in those.
5. Connect with people on linkedin. Ask them for advice.
6. Do some temp work. In a related area. ie civil document controller. admin. phone calls. Health and safety audits.
7. Be ready to work. have all of your documents ready to go. tax file number qualifications. certificates. scan them and email them to your self. have in the header – qualification tax file number super details tickets etc.
8. Be prepared to travel.
9. Practice in front of your video camera some interview questions. See how you answer them. You be the critic. Ask your friends, ask people you do not like. Depends on who will give you the clear cut answers you need and not be politically correct. If you speak to fast or to slow. who will share that with you without hurting your feelings?
